Thigh and arm lift surgeries (also called thighplasty and brachioplasty, respectively) are cosmetic and or functional procedures designed to remove excess skin and fat from the thighs or upper arms, often after significant weight loss or ageing. These surgeries aim to create a firmer, smoother, and more contoured appearance.
Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)
Purpose:
Removes loose, sagging skin and excess fat from the inner or outer thighs.
Procedure:
Performed under general anaesthesia.
Incisions usually start on the inside of the groin crease and may extend down the inner thigh towards the knee.
Excess skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin is tightened and reshaped.
Liposuction may be used to assist with fat removal.
Recovery:
Swelling and bruising are common for a few weeks.
Compression garments for 4-6 weeks help reduce swelling and support healing.
Most patients return to light activities in 1–2 weeks, but full recovery may take several weeks.
Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Purpose:
Removes sagging skin and fat from the upper arms, colloquially referred to as “bat wings.”
Procedure:
Done under general anaesthesia.
Incisions are made along the inner part of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow. The incision can sometimes be kept in the armpit if the arm skin excess is mild. In more severe cases, the scar may occasionally extend to to the side of the chest wall.
Excess skin and fat are removed, and the skin is tightened.
Liposuction may also be used to improve contour.
Recovery:
Swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort are expected.
Wearing compression sleeves is recommended.
Most people return to daily activities within 1–2 weeks; full healing may take longer.
⚠️ Risks of Both Surgeries
Bleeding or infection
Scarring (can be significant, though placed discreetly)
Asymmetry or contour irregularities
Fluid buildup (seroma)
Numbness or changes in sensation
Delayed wound healing
Rarely, may develop:
- lymphoedema (chronic swelling of the treated limb)
- blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus)
- poor cosmetic outcome requiring revision
Results
Tighter, more toned appearance in thighs or arms
Results are long-lasting with stable weight and good lifestyle habits
Scars will fade over time but may not disappear completely
These surgeries are especially popular after major weight loss and are often part of body contouring procedures.
